Rethinking Knowledge Translation Practices in Indigenous Research Contexts
Dr. Melody Morton Ninomiya
Tuesday April 18th - 1:30pm
Integrated knowledge translation (iKT) is a term used to describe iterative processes of sharing and exchanging knowledge with knowledge users (those who can act on research findings) as research partners, from the earliest research development stage to the end-of-project dissemination stage. The intent of iKT is to improve the relevance and usefulness of research studies in particular contexts. This presentation will focus on how iKT must be further adapted when conducting research with Indigenous communities. Using examples from past and current research, Melody will illustrate and discuss ethical imperatives, benefits, and lessons learned from doing community-based research with Indigenous people and communities.
Melody is an educator and community-based researcher with a background in Indigenous health and well-being, knowledge sharing and translation, curriculum development and teaching, and complex issues related to social determinants of health. Her experiences of growing up in Japan and Canada, teaching high school, working in the field of restorative justice, and conducting community-based research inform much of her research and teaching interests. Melody is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre for Addictions and Mental Health (CAMH) and Well Living House, an action research centre focused on Indigenous health and well-being at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto.
We hope to see you there!
