[Portrait of Viola Desmond (Public domain image from Wikimedia Commons)]Last month, the Bank of Canada announced<http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canadian-banknote-woman-1.3885844> that Viola Desmond would feature on the $10 bill in its next series of bank notes. Desmond was an entrepreneur from Halifax, N.S., who is remembered for refusing to leave a whites-only area of a movie theatre in Nova Scotia in 1946, and subsequently being among the first to challenge Canada's racial segregation laws.
Join us to learn more about Viola Desmond, and the history of the fight for civil rights and equality in the Maritimes.
Professor Jim Walker<https://uwaterloo.ca/history/jim> has studied race and human rights in Canada, and specifically in the Maritimes, for more than 50 years. He is a member of the Order of Canada and the Royal Society of Canada for his scholarship on human rights and race relations in Canada.
