** Anna Magdalena Kokits - Coast to Coast Tour
------------------------------------------------------------

Award-winning Austrian pianist Anna Magdalena Kokits will play a selection of works, including ones by Beethoven, Gershwin, and contemporary Canadian composer Vivian Fung, as part of her coast-to-coast tour during Canada 150.

** About Ms. Kokits
------------------------------------------------------------

Anna Magdalena Kokits completed her studies at the Vienna Conservatorium Private University in 2013. While still in her teens, she gave her first solo performances with orchestras such as the Tonkünstler Orchester Niederösterreich and the Moscow Virtuosos. Ms. Kokits has been a frequent and popular guest at festivals all over Europe, such as the festival “Nei suoni dei luoghi” in Italy, the “Euregio Musikfestival” in the Netherlands, the “Musikalischer Sommer in Ostfriesland” in Germany, and the “Music in Rhodes Festival” in Greece.

Ms. Kokits's appearance is co-sponsored by Conrad Grebel University College, the Embassy of Austria in Ottawa, Alexander Zemlinksky Fonds bei der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien, Austrian Cultural Forum, and the Waterloo Centre for German Studies. Photo of Ms. Kokits by Nancy Horowitz.

** CALLIOPE Austria: Women in Society, Culture and the Sciences
------------------------------------------------------------

This exhibition surveys the life stories of Austrian aristocrats, artists, salon women, scientists, women’s rights activists, politicians, actresses, musicians, physicians, and stage directors in chronological form. The arc thus drawn extends from the early 19th century to the present. A common theme evident throughout is women’s struggle for emancipation, with all its attendant triumphs and setbacks. From Biedermeier-period desires for freedom to our 21st century, much has been accomplished. But one also sees clearly that true equality has not yet been achieved, with much indeed still to be done.

CALLIOPE Austria is co-sponsored by Conrad Grebel University College, the Embassy of Austria in Ottawa, Austrian Cultural Forum, and the Waterloo Centre for German Studies.
