Important Update on Grimm Lecture: Thinking Itself is Dangerous. Reading Hannah Arendt

Dear Members of the Faculty of Arts:

In response to concerns about the coronavirus, the University of Waterloo is cancelling all non-essential events, and the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) is cancelling all bookings of its facilities. The Grimm Lecture (Thinking Itself is Dangerous: Reading Hannah Arendt) was scheduled to be held in the CIGI Auditorium on Thursday, 19 March 2020, and must now be cancelled. Misty and I had been looking forward to welcoming a full house to the lecture, and we’re very sorry that the event cannot take place.

Given the anxiety surrounding the public health situation and the uncertainty as to when things might return to normal, it is not possible to reschedule the Grimm Lecture. We are making arrangements for Samantha Rose Hill to livestream her lecture over the internet at the same time as the in-person lecture was going to take place (7pm Thursday, 19 March 2020). Once we have finalized those details, we will communicate them to you. We realize this doesn’t completely make up for the real thing, and as helpful as livestreaming is, it can’t be used to beam into your homes the lovely reception we had planned. But we want to make sure you have an opportunity to hear the lecture.

I’m very sorry to disappoint you with news of this cancellation. I look forward to welcoming you to our future events.
