It is with great pleasure that the Department of Fine Arts invites you to the virtual opening reception of FLUX, the 47th annual undergraduate thesis exhibition. The virtual launch will be filled with reasons to celebrate!!! Alongside the more formal thank you's, acknowledgements and announcements (including the winner of the Curator's Choice Award), the event will feature talks by a number of the exhibiting artists, Q&A's with the artists, and much, much more! You can even join the students in a live toast so come prepared!

On Saturday March 25th the FLUX website, http://www.uwflux.com<http://www.uwflux.com/>, will go live. You have to see this site. It is a deep and rich dive into all things art. Produced collaboratively by the students, it foregrounds their many skills-organizational, design, retouching, writing, and critical, not to mention their incredible artwork. On the website you will find artists' bios, interviews, and samples of their production, along with accompanying artist statements.

And there's still more-later this month the FLUX catalogue launches, so stay tuned for this date.

Our students have been diligently working on this initiative. It was not easy to let go of what was the "normal" rollout of the 4th year show held in UWAG. As Professor Tara Cooper who taught them in the fall term, and Lois Andison who have taught them in the winter term can attest to, these students are kind, supportive, inventive, and resourceful. They had to say goodbye to the tools and equipment that they would have access to at East Campus Hall and to dig deep into their home-based toolkits. We think that you'll find what they've conceived, uncovered, and created to be extraordinary.

Lastly, to put FLUX into context, we share an excerpt from the class:

Flux is a state of flowing, a state of change, an in-between space, and the prefix of the Fluxus movement: an international art movement of the 1960s-1970s that centred art making's democratization, chance, accidents, play, and the use of any nearby materials in sight.

Our fourth year class has experienced quite a state of Flux since September, along with the rest of the world, and in its midst we take up our artistic practices as tools to reflect on the past, and to seek change in our present. Throughout our degrees, we have built skills as emerging artists that we will always carry, and amongst them, flexibility and connection have become crucial in this online world. We would not have made it here without each other.

We invite you to join us in this flowing, changing, in-between state of Flux: the changes might be hard, but at least we will experience them together.

The Fine Arts Department is a community with a vibrant and caring ecology and everyone from the custodians, technicians, staff and professors have had a stake in the lives of these wonderful students. And in return they have given us so much back. Thank you class of 2021! There is much to celebrate. See you on Saturday.

p.s. if you cannot make it for the live event
please make sure to visit the website<http://www.uwflux.com/> on or

Sincerely,
Lois Andison & Tara Cooper
