Happy Fall term! Please mark your calendar for the first Indigenous Speakers event of 2022-23. On Monday, Sept. 26, we’re proud to present Jani Lauzon, director and playwright, and Kaitlyn Riordan, playwright, whose co-created play 1939<https://www.stratfordfestival.ca/WhatsOn/PlaysAndEvents/Production/1939?gclid=CjwKCAjwsfuYBhAZEiwA5a6CDEcrpFqcayKFFdLpy7aSmfex6k84USBzUkzfMbj1SqFVGcJFzgSY7xoCdaIQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds> is currently running at the Stratford Festival.

Lauzon and Riordan will speak about their unique process of engaging community and support from Elders and Knowledge Keepers to develop 1939. Set at a fictional Residential School in Northern Ontario, the play explores the use of Shakespeare as a tool of colonization — and what happens when the students subvert that intention and bring their cultures and lived experiences to the task of putting on a play.
