The Society for Theatre Research

The society provides a meeting point for all those interested in the history
and technique of the British theatre.  The STR publishes at least one and
often two books a year which members receive free. Recent titles have
included the *Directory of Performing Arts Resources with the Theatre
Museum, Russell Jackson's edition of Theodor Fontane's Shakespeare in the
London Theatre 1855-58,
Carol J. Carlisle's biography of Helen Faucit, Janette Dillon's Performance
and Spectacle in Hall's Chronicles and most recently (2003) Gorel Garlick's
The Theatre Designs and Plays of Samuel Beazley. Forthcoming publications
include a book on The Round House and The Open Space and a collection of
documents by English actors visiting Australia (1840-1914). In order to
achieve a wider
readership the STR will be co-publishing books with Ashgate Publishing, The
University of Hertfordshire Press and The Currency Press of Australia.

*The Directory of Performing Arts Resources (1998, retail price £18), which
led to the 'Backstage' project, provides information about theatre holdings
in 561 libraries and other collections. It is available as a FREE
INTRODUCTORY OFFER TO NEW MEMBERS.

The STR distributes Theatre Notebook, an illustrated refereed journal
devoted to the history and technique of the British theatre, worldwide to
members. Theatre Notebook is edited by Trevor R Griffiths, Marion O'Connor

The STR organises an annual programme of events. Currently there are six or
more lectures given by invited speakers held monthly in London during the
winter open to the general public and followed by discussion and
refreshments. The full programme is available on the society's website.

The STR awards research grants to encourage work on theatrical subjects,
especially those connected with live theatre. Awards may be made annually of
sums ranging from £100 to £1,000, as contributions to the cost of research
which is substantially concerned with the history and practice of the
British theatre. The Society has now made grants totalling £58,750 to 141
recipients since
the first awards in 1988. For more information about the awards, and the
procedure for application, please contact (online via the society website or

should normally be
returned by 1st February. Awards are announced in May for immediate effect.

The STR awards an annual Theatre Book Prize, given to a book in English, of
original research into any aspect of the history and technique of the
British theatre, but not restricted only to authors of British nationality
nor to books solely from British publishers. The current value of the Prize
is £400, given to the author.

The STR has an active Northern Group, which organises a separate programme

The STR holds an annual Festival in memory of William Poel. Presented in
association with Globe Education, this annual performance celebrating the
pioneering work of actor-director William Poel in reforming the staging of
Shakespearian and early English drama at the start of the twentieth century,
consists of duologues from early English, Elizabethan and Jacobean plays
performed by
students from Britain's leading drama schools.

The STR acts as an advisory body on theatrical matters and puts on
occasional Study Days on particular aspects of theatre. The Society would
welcome suggestions for study days and conferences that it might co-host.
