Performance Studies is an interdisciplinary field that interprets the
human condition critically through the lens of performance.
Performances emerge from all spheres of life: political, economic,
religious, scientific, social and cultural. Scholars in this field of
knowledge certainly examine traditional theatrical practices, but they
also extend their gaze to a much broader array of public and private
performative activities including ritual practices, sports and games,
and the practices of everyday life. Different critical theories expose
performances that entrench ideologies, political regimes and social
structures. They also expose how certain performances can serve as
occasions for resisting, reconfiguring and circumventing normalizing
institutions. Finally, Performance Studies constitutes a research and
analytical paradigm in which the body and embodied practices emerge as
a central focus for critical social and cultural scholarship.
The Performance Studies Executive Committee includes faculty from seven
academic departments as well as program affiliates from an even broader
range of disciplines. Executive Committee members are Susan Bennett
(English); Doug Brown (Kinesiology); Anne Flynn (Dance and
Kinesiology); Penny Farfan (Drama and English); Mary Polito (English);
Kirsten Pullen (English); Brian Rusted (Communication and Culture);
Gavin Semple (Drama); Florentine Strzelczyk (German, Slavic & East
Asian Studies); and Paul Woodrow (Art).
Funding (in the form of internal and external awards, Graduate Teaching
Assistantships and Graduate Research Stipends) is available to
qualified candidates.
