August 29 Dr. Stuart Richmond
"The Arts, Community and the Authentic Learner"
Overview: The Arts are forms of understanding that develop mind, feeling,
imagination, and touch, and thus are very powerful emotionally. They involve
aesthetics, and can be practiced for their own sakes, which teaches us about
intrinsic value, but also, as with the development of appreciation for the
environment they can have significant social and community response.
Stuart Richmond is Professor and Coordinator of Arts Education at Simon
Fraser University. He was founding Dean of the School of Creative Arts,
Sciences and Technology at the Hong Kong Institute of Education, Director of
the Simon Fraser Gallery, and Editor of the Canadian Review of Art
Education. He has published in the leading international journals of arts
education, and he taught for several years in the public schools of Alberta
and BC. In 2003 was appointed Visiting Professor at the Tianjin Academy of
Fine Art, China. His exhibition, "Medieval Places: Recent Photographs of
French Romanesque Architecture" was held at Alliance Francaise in Vancouver
in May, 2006.

"Arts Education is Alive and Well"
Experiences in the arts continue to be vital aspects of children's learning
and development. This is being recognized by national and international
organizations, and is resulting in some initiatives that produce hope for
all arts educators. Along with the examples of inspiring projects and
effective work that prompt us to celebrate are some challenges that
hopefully prompt us to action.
Dr. Sharon McCoubrey is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education
at the University of British Columbia Okanagan. She is President of the
Canadian Society for Education through Art, and on the Executive of the BC
Art Teachers Association. She has a BEd and a MEd from the University of
Victoria, and a PhD from UBCV. She has been awarded the "Art Educator of
the Year Award" from the National Association for Education through Art
(Chicago, 1993), from the Canadian Society for Education through Art
(Montreal, 1997), and the BC Art Teachers' Association (Vancouver, 2002).
Dr. McCoubrey has authored several art education resource books, and has
research interests in all aspects of art education, in aboriginal education,
teachers' beliefs, and assessment. She serves as Chair of a municipal
Public Art Commission, Chair of Lake Country ArtWalk, is a Director of the
Arts Council of the Central Okanagan, and when possible, finds time to spend
in her studio painting.
