CALL FOR PAPERS:
American Theatre and Drama Society (ATDS)
Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) Conference
August 3–6, 2010, Hyatt Century Plaza Hotel, Los Angeles, California
Submissions Deadlines: October 15th (individual papers only; send to
Beth Osborne at bosborne at fsu.edu); November 1st (complete panels; go
to ATHE at www.athe.org)
“Theatre Alive: Theatre, Media, and Survival”
The American Theatre and Drama Society (ATDS) invites papers/panels
that explore the paradoxical relationship that has always existed
between theatre and media, from critics’ reactions to theatrical
spectacle, to the panic that film would displace live theatre at the
beginning of the 20th century, to the present age of virtual
performances and the opportunities to attend theatrical events as part
of your “Second Life,” rather than your real one. We are
interested
in sessions that engage with theatre and media, including the ways in
which spectacle, film, digital, and the vast variety of media forums
engage with and are integrated into live performance in American
Theatre. There are many possibilities for exploration, including:
How has the development of new technology – from gas lighting to the
“Second Life” – driven American Theatre to develop new
strategies,
styles, or elements of performance? How has theatre contributed to
the development of new technology and media?
How have theatre and media been mutually beneficial in American
Theatre? Conversely, in what ways have they hindered one another?
How has technology become an integral part of the American theatrical
experience? How does this chance our conception of theatre as an art
form that depend on liveness, but that is no longer a “live”
event?
What cultural, social, or economic conditions have threatened the
survival of American Theatre? How has American Theatre responded to
these threats?
How have American Theatre artists used media to extend the theatrical
event, whether it is through the integration of filmed elements, multi-
site performances, or other methods?
How does media representation impact American Theatre? How does all
the media of the digital age shape the theatrical event?
While the American Theatre and Drama Society encourages the submission
of papers and panels addressing any of these issues, colleagues are
welcome to submit proposals that deal with other engaging topics in
American Theatre (preference will be given to sessions that explore
the ATHE 2010 themes). In addition to the traditional format of
papers and panels, ATDS also welcomes proposals in the form of
roundtables, talkbacks, staged readings, virtual events, etc.
Preference will be given to ATDS members. If you are interested in
enjoying all of the membership benefits of ATDS – including your own
subscription to the Journal of American Drama and Theatre – please
visit the website (www.athe.org/atds) for an application or contact
ATDS Membership Secretary Stuart Hecht (hecht at bc.edu).
ABOUT the American Theatre and Drama Society: The American Theatre and
Drama Society (ATDS) is an incorporated organization dedicated to the
study of United States theatre and drama, its varied histories,
traditions, literatures, and performances within its cultural
contexts. ATDS also encourages the evolving debate exploring national
identities and experiences through research, pedagogy, and practice.
ATDS recognizes that notions of America and the US encompass
migrations of peoples and cultures that overlap and influence one
another. To this end, ATDS welcomes scholars, teachers, and
practitioners world-wide.
INFORMATION ON SUBMITTING PROPOSALS:
Completed proposals (with all panel members assembled) may be
submitted directly to ATHE at www.athe.org by November 1, 2009. Please
forward a copy of your completed proposal to Beth Osborne
(bosborne at fsu.edu
). PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL TECHNOLOGY REQUESTS MUST BE INCLUDED IN YOUR
COMPLETED PROPOSAL. (ATHE cannot accommodate AV needs submitted after
November 1 without substantial cost to the individual presenter.)
While complete sessions are strongly encouraged, individual paper
proposals may be submitted to ATDS Conference Planner, Dr. Beth
Osborne, at bosborne at fsu.edu. I will attempt to group submissions into
cohesive panels, but cannot guarantee inclusion. In order to be
considered, individual proposals must be submitted by OCTOBER 15,
2009. Abstracts (250 words) must include paper title and contact
information, and must specify any AV needs. ATHE does not accept
individual paper submissions -- DO NOT submit your individual proposal
on the ATHE website. Individuals wishing to identify colleagues to
create panels prior to the November 1st deadline may use the ATDS
listserv: ATDS at LISTSERV.COFC.EDU to circulate questions or possible
panel topics.
All AV and technology is fee-based this year. Grants for AV support
are available and encouraged. To apply, follow the directions on the
proposal submissions form and fill out any additional information
required. You will be notified of grant monies at the same time as
the status of your panel. ATHE cannot accommodate AV needs submitted
after November 1st without substantial cost to the individual
presenter.
Please note that ATHE runs from Tuesday-Friday in 2010. The
application form will not accept scheduling preferences this year.
Presenters wishing to create multidisciplinary panels must contact the
Focus Group Conference Planners for each of the THREE groups they
propose as. MD panels that do not complete this step are likely to be
rejected.
Presenters proposing programs outside of the traditional panel format
are asked to be specific in their proposals concerning the structure
and number of participants so that ATHE can be notified about space/
time needs.
ATHE will notify ATDS concerning accepted or rejected panels by late
February. Panelists should expect to hear from the Conference Planner
or their Panel Chair by early March.
FOR MORE INFORMATION, PLEASE VISIT THE ATDS WEBSITE AT www.ATDS.ORG
