Dear Colleagues
We are pleased to announce that alt. theatre: cultural diversity and the stage 7.2 (December 2009) is now out.
It features:
. Ted Little's editorial ("Never Again")--a look at intersections between oral history and performance in the project, Life Stories of Montrealers Displaced By War, Genocide, and Other Human Rights Violations.
. A letter-to-the-editor by Savannah Walling, Artistic Director, Vancouver Moving Theatre, in response to the article in alt. theatre 7.1 (September 2009) "All White All Right?," in which Jerry Wasserman publishes letters from his Vancouverplays Website about the absence of non-white faces onstage in Vancouver.
. Lisa Ndejuru's "A view from the diaspora,' a reflection on Jennifer Capraru's report on Isôko's production of The Monument in Rwanda published in alt. theatre 6.3.
. Samer Al-Saber's "A Theatrical Awda: Palestine, Sahmatah, Refugees, and Going Home," an essay exploring the political and emotional power of theatre through Sahmatah-a play that faces head-on the 1948 catastrophe of Palestine on a very personal level.
. Savannah Walling's "Excavating Yesterday," a reflection on her personal and professional journey as an artist in and of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.
. Nicholas Backman's "Writing Peace: Can art be a powerful tool in building peace in the context of Truth and Treason?," in which he muses on how art can build peace through the evocation of compassion; this is the winning essay in Teesri Duniya's 'Writing Peace Contest' for students under nineteen years of age in Quebec about Rahul Varma's new play, Truth and Treason, which premiered in Montreal at the Monument-National in September 2009.
. Alex Bulmer's Dispatch, "It Happened in a Tent," a piece about the Theatre Centre / Abit Omen / Die in Debt production of The Book of Judith.
. Rob Nunn's book review of the second volume of Staging Coyote's Dream: An Anthology of First Nations Drama in English, edited by Monique Mojica and Ric Knowles.
Upcoming in alt. theatre

. Elizabeth Courtney on Victoria-based Lina de Guevara's Puente Theatre co-production of Algarabia.
. Adrienne Wong's Dispatch on The Wrecking Ball and cuts to arts funding in B.C.
