Master of Arts in Theatre (MA) (Theatre Theory and Dramaturgy)

The Department of Theatre offers a two-year program leading to the degree of Master of Arts (MA) in Theatre  (Theatre Theory and Dramaturgy).
This program, which consists of courses and a thesis, gives students the opportunity to develop and perfect their analytical, critical and scholarly skills, as well as enrich the intellectual curiosity required for doctoral studies.
By expanding the MA students’ academic scope with respect to the epistemological and interdisciplinary specificities of theatre as an art form and as a discipline of study, the program prepares graduates to follow doctoral programs offered in Canada and abroad.
In addition, upon completion of this program MA graduates may choose to work as, literary advisors, dramaturges in theatrical practice, or as teachers in community colleges or CÉGEPs.
The Department of Theatre recognizes the pedagogical, academic and practical benefits of interaction between theatre practitioners and theoreticians, both in the classroom and in the rehearsal hall. The existence of two graduate programs: MA in Theatre (Theory and Dramaturgy) and MFA in Theatre (Directing) creates a unique learning environment within the only graduate program in theatre in Canada’s capital.
MA students have the opportunity to interact with the graduate candidates enrolled in the Master of Fine Arts (MFA). Students in the two programs share seminars: Dramaturgy and Theory of Performance and can collaborate on a number of academic and practical projects.
The Graduate Program in Theatre promotes various forms of exchange between the professional theatre, the Faculty and students.
The MA Program encourages the analysis of the Western world’s principal theatrical traditions from various discursive perspectives. Students are expected to increase their knowledge and understanding of Canada’s two principal theatrical traditions, as well as develop scholarly discourse in regards to each.
We accept only 6 students per year, with alternating English and French language cohorts.  The admission for the Fall of 2012 will be for the Anglophone cohort only.

Master of Fine Arts, Directing for the Theatre

The Department of Theatre of the University of Ottawa offers the only bilingual Master of Fine Arts in Theatre (MFA) (Directing) in directing for the theatre in the country. 
Founded in the fall of 2004, this program allows students to benefit from the approaches to directing found Canada's two principal theatrical cultures. 
During their two-year course of study, our MFA students complete a rigorous practical and theoretical training as directors of repertoire. Our program also aims to cultivate our students' sense of aesthetic diversity, exposing them to contrasting approaches to the director's art, from traditional, text-based production to devised and postdramatic performance. 
MFA students have the opportunity to work alongside acclaimed professional directors. MFA students have served as assistant directors to such artists as Richard Rose and Peter Hinton and have taken master classes with internationally renowned directors as Denis Marleau, Alexander Marin, Jean-Marie Papapietro, Guy Sprung, and Nadia Ross.
Furthermore, student directors are provided with the services of professional actors from the Ottawa/Gatineau area during their studio work. 
The MFA in directing accepts two students per year, and there are only four candidates in the program at any given time. 
Due to the demanding nature of this degree, the MFA in directing can only be undertaken as a full-time course of study.

Maîtrise ès art en théâtre (M.A.) (théorie théâtrale et dramaturgie)

Le Département de théâtre de l’Université d’Ottawa offre un programme de maîtrise ès art d’une durée de deux ans menant à l'obtention d'une maîtrise ès art en théâtre (théorie théâtrale et dramaturgie).
Ce programme, qui comprend des cours et la rédaction d’une thèse, offre aux étudiants l’occasion de développer et de perfectionner leur capacité d’analyse et leur sens critique comme les aptitudes méthodologiques et intellectuelles requises pour poursuivre des études au niveau doctoral.
Au terme de leurs études, les diplômés du programme de maîtrise ès art en théâtre pourront aussi choisir de s’orienter vers une carrière de conseiller littéraire, de dramaturge au sein de compagnies théâtrales ou de professeur de niveau collégial (CÉGEP ou collèges communautaires).
Nous reconnaissons tous les bénéfices pédagogiques, académiques et pratiques que nos étudiants peuvent tirer de l’interaction des théoriciens et des praticiens, en salle de cours ou de répétition.
La coexistence de deux programmes de deuxième cycle au sein du Département de théâtre, une M.A. en théorie théâtrale et dramaturgie et une M.P.T. (mise en scène), fait du Département de théâtre un lieu d’apprentissage unique dans la capitale canadienne. Les étudiants en maîtrise ont ainsi l’occasion d’échanger avec les étudiants de la maîtrise en pratique théâtrale (M.P.T.) (mise en scène) dans le cadre de séminaires communs (Dramaturgie et Théorie de l’événement théâtral) et collaborent étroitement à un certain nombre de projets théoriques et pratiques.
La maîtrise ès art en théâtre permet également au Département de favoriser des échanges variés entre la communauté théâtrale locale et les professeurs et étudiants du Département.
Nous encourageons l’analyse des principales traditions théâtrales occidentales selon des perspectives théoriques variées. Les étudiants sont appelés à approfondir leurs connaissances et leur compréhension des deux principales traditions théâtrales du Canada et à élaborer des approches propres à l’étude de chacune.
Six étudiants seulement sont admis chaque année au programme, alternativement en anglais et en français.  L’admission pour l'automne 2012 se fera pour la clientèle anglophone seulement.

Maîtrise en pratique théâtrale (M.P.T.) (mise en scène)

Le Département de théâtre de l’Université d’Ottawa offre le seul programme bilingue de maîtrise en pratique théâtrale (M.P.T.) (mise en scène) au Canada, un programme de conservatoire en mise en scène.  
Créé à l’automne 2004, ce programme permet aux étudiants et étudiantes de recevoir une formation pratique rigoureuse axée sur le répertoire, tout en approfondissant leurs connaissances des deux traditions théâtrales principales du pays. Le programme encourage l’exploration esthétique en exposant les étudiants à diverses approches : la production traditionnelle centrée sur le texte, la représentation dite « postdramatique » ainsi que certaines formes de mise en scène spécifiques au théâtre de création. 
De plus, les étudiants ont l’opportunité de travailler avec des metteurs en scène professionnels reconnus. Certains étudiants ont été assistants à la mise en scène auprès d’artistes tels que Richard Rose, Diana Leblanc et Peter Hinton; d’autres ont suivi des cours de maître animés par des metteurs en scène de réputation internationale dont Denis Marleau et David William. Les « étudiants-metteurs en scène » bénéficient également de l’expertise d’acteurs professionnels de la région d’Ottawa-Gatineau pour compléter leurs exercices pratiques. 
Afin de garantir aux étudiants un enseignement de qualité, le programme est contingenté : seulement deux candidats sont admis par année et le programme se limite en tout temps à quatre étudiants. Seuls des étudiants à temps plein seront admis et ces derniers ont la possibilité d’obtenir des bourses et des assistanats.

La date limite de la demande d’admission est le 15 janvier 2012.
