2013 CATR conference 2nd call for open paper panels

The 2013 conference of the Canadian Association for Theatre Research (CATR) will take place at the University of Victoria, June 1- 4, as part of the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences. The theme of the 2013 Congress is @ the edge / a la fine pointe.

The mandate of the Association is to support and encourage research in theatre and performance studies, with a special interest in Canadian work. All session organizers and presenters are invited to address the Congress theme; however, proposals that depart from the official Congress theme will also be accepted. Graduate students are encouraged to apply. Proposals are encouraged to respond to one of the following suggested topics:

Performing on the edge: theatre on/of the coasts
The borders between theory and practice
Cutting-edge technology and theatre
Outliers and outcasts: marginalized theatre practitioners and practices
Sharp edges: theatre criticism
Edging towards equality? diversity and theatre
Getting a word in edgewise: theatre and language(s)
The leading edge in educational research: theatre pedagogy
The centre/periphery divide: urban and/or rural theatre
The economic edge: financing and theatrical survival
Producing edgy theatre in Canada: problems and possibilities
Bodies on the brink: extreme performance(s)
Intersections: intercultural and international theatre in Canada
The thin edge? authority and theatre
At the edge of human and non-human: ecology, theatre, performance

As with our last three meetings in Montréal (2010), Fredericton (2011) and Kitchener-Waterloo (2012), CATR 2013 will offer a variety of participation modes. These include praxis workshops, open paper panels, curated paper panels, seminars and roundtables. Those who wish to submit proposals for more than one format may do so, though preferred mode(s) of participation should be identified. Proposals are now being sought for the following:

Open paper panels: There will be a number of sessions featuring grouped 20-minute papers. To be considered for an open paper presentation, please submit a 300-word abstract outlining your research, its context and its significance along with a short bio to Allana C. Lindgren, chair of the conference planning committee, at aclind at uvic.ca<mailto:aclind at uvic.ca> by December 10, 2012. Acceptance will be based on scholarly rigor and originality.

Applicants are encouraged to submit proposals in either English or French for any of these conference sessions. We encourage you to present your work in the language of your choice. CATR will facilitate assistance with translating slides, handouts, etc to assist participants or audience members who require translated materials.

For all proposals, participants may choose to blend more traditional academic modes with performance practice within panels and/or within individual presentations.

Guidelines for all CATR conference participants:

·                Participants must be members of CATR and register for the conference.

·                Participants are required to meet the requirements and deadlines of the session for which they are applying, and may be asked to withdraw if they do not do so.

·                Participants are expected to attend and participate in the conference session in person (No SKYPE, Online or distance participation during the conference).

·                This year, the winners of our annual CATR awards in the areas of Canadian-international performance, Francophone performance, intercultural performance and applied or community-based theatre/performance will be selected in advance of (rather than at) our annual conference. Awards will be decided based on materials submitted to a call for nominees that will be circulated in January; nominations (including supporting materials) will be due in approximately late March. The awards offer funds in support of the winners' travel to Congress 2013, and all graduate students and early career scholars who have had work accepted for presentation at CATR 2013 are eligible for nomination. Colloque de l’ACRT 2013, Université de Victoria, Victoria, Colombie-Britannique

L’édition 2013 du colloque de l’Association canadienne de la recherche théâtrale (ACRT) se tiendra à l’Université de Victoria du 1er au 4 juin, dans le cadre du Congrès des sciences humaines. Le thème de 2013 est @ the edge / à la fine pointe.

Le mandat de l’Association est de soutenir et d’encourager la recherche en théâtre et sur la performance, en prônant en particulier la recherche sur les œuvres canadiennes. Bien que les organisateurs et organisatrices de séances à thème, aussi bien que ceux et celles qui proposeront des communications libres, soient invités à s’insérer dans le thème central du congrès, d’autres projets seront acceptés. Nous invitons chaudement les étudiants de maîtrise et de doctorat à présenter un projet. Nous suggérons les thèmes suivant pour vos propositions:

La performance des extrêmes: théâtre sur et de la côte
Les frontières entre théorie et pratique
Technologie de pointe et théâtre
Discordance et exclusion: pratiques et praticiens marginalisés
Lames aiguisées: critique théâtrale
À petits pas vers l’égalité: diversité et théâtre
Les mots de la bouche: théâtre et langues
La fine pointe de la recherche en enseignement: pédagogie théâtrale

Comme par le passé à Montréal (2010), à Fredericton (2011) et à Waterloo (2012), le colloque de 2013 offrira des modes de participation variés. On comptera des ateliers de praxis, des communications libres, des séances à thème, des séminaires et des tables rondes. Les personnes intéressées à soumettre une proposition à plus d’une séance peuvent le faire, mais il serait préférable d’indiquer le ou les modes de présentation privilégiés. Nous invitons les propositions pour les types de séances suivants:

Communications libres: Nous tiendrons des séances regroupant des présentations de 20 minutes. Pour soumettre une communication, veuillez envoyer un résumé de 300 mots présentant la recherche, son contexte et sa portée, accompagné d’une courte biographie, à Allana C. Lindgren, présidente du comité organisateur du congrès, à aclind at uvic.ca<mailto:aclind at uvic.ca> au plus tard le 10 décembre 2012. La sélection se basera sur la rigueur académique et l’originalité.

Les candidats peuvent soumettre leur proposition en français ou en anglais pour toutes les séances du colloque. Nous vous laissons libre de présenter votre communication dans la langue de votre choix. L’ACTR fournira du soutien à l’auditoire qui en aurait besoin avec entre autres des traductions et des documents d’accompagnement.

Pour toutes les communications, les participants peuvent choisir d’amalgamer les modes de présentation traditionnels en  milieu universitaire avec des modes puisant dans la performance, que ce soit lors des séances interactives ou lors des communications individuelles.

Directives pour les participants au congrès de l’ACRT:

·                Les participants doivent être membres de l’ACRT et doivent s’inscrire au congrès.

·                Les participants doivent respecter les exigences et les dates limites des séances pour lesquelles ils s’inscrivent. Dans le cas contraire, un désistement pourra leur être demandé.

·                On attend des participants qu’ils soient sur place pour la séance à laquelle ils sont inscrits. (La participation par SKYPE, en ligne ou par téléconférence n’est pas acceptée).

·                Cette année, les gagnants de nos prix annuels ACRT pour la recherche internationale, le théâtre francophone, le théâtre interculturel et le théâtre appliqué / communautaire sera choisie en avance de notre conférence annuelle. Un appel à candidatures sera distribué en Janvier; Les propositions et les matériaux justificatifs seront dus vers la fin de Mars. Les prix offrent les gagnants des fonds d’assistance pour voyager à notre conférence 2013 en Victoria, C.-B. Les étudiants des cycles supérieurs et les chercheurs au début de leur carrière qui ont eu des travaux acceptés pour présentation à l’ACRT 2013 sont admissibles pour nomination.
