Description: The Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies, Faculty of Arts and Science, University of Toronto, seeks applications for a position in the area of Asian Theatre and Performance Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor. The appointment will commence on July 1, 2014.

Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. degree in Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies or related fields, by July 1, 2014 or soon thereafter. The applicant will have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and research in Asian performance and theatre traditions, and a cognate interest in the comparative study of theatre and performance across cultures, particularly between Asia and the Americas, or on other issues related to the Asian diaspora and globalization. Asian will be broadly defined for this search as the study of modern performance cultures linked to the pre-modern and post-modern practices of continental Asia, South or South-east Asia, Korea or Japan. We are interested in scholars who approach theatre and performance studies from an interdisciplinary perspective through historically and theoretically grounded research in cultural studies, critical race and/or ethnic studies, and/or the visual arts, music, and dance.

The successful applicant will serve the diverse interests of our undergraduate student population and contribute to research-intensive masters and doctoral programs with a large interdisciplinary faculty. Both undergraduate and graduate programs have a mandate to provide an interdisciplinary and practice-based academic focus. The successful applicant will integrate teaching and research in both graduate and undergraduate programs and increase our international profile with respect both to research and education.

Candidates should have the ability to teach a broad range of courses in an undergraduate theatre curriculum, including Western and post-colonial theatre histories, and to combine the teaching of theory/history and performance practice at all levels. We especially seek candidates with a commitment to shaping the future of the discipline through a strong commitment to teaching as well as in their particular area of research. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

All qualified applicants are invited to apply through the U of T’s Academic Employment Opportunities website or by clicking on the following direct link: https://utoronto.taleo.net/careersection/10050/jobdetail.ftl?lang=en&job=1300954. Applicants should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching dossier (including a statement of teaching philosophy, sample syllabi, and sample student evaluations if available), an example of academic writing (published or in progress, of no more than twenty pages), and a statement outlining current and future research interests. If you have questions about this position please contact Professor John Astington, Acting Director, Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies (director.graddrama at utoronto.ca). All application materials should be submitted online.

The UofT application system can accommodate up to five attachments (10 MB) per candidate profile; please combine attachments into one or two files in PDF/MS Word format. Submission guidelines can be found at: http://uoft.me/how-to-apply.

Applicants should also provide the names, addresses and up-to-date email addresses of three referees who may be asked to send letters on their behalf.
The closing date for applications is November 15, 2013. For more information on the Centre, please visit our website at http://dramacentre.utoronto.ca.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.

With thanks
