To Foreign Shores! Canadian Theatre Makers at Home and Abroad (seminar)
This seminar invites interested participants to investigate dramatic and performative renderings of Canada in the dual context of the émigré theatre experiences 1) within the country and 2) abroad.
It aims to explore the West-East/North-South dichotomies in Canadian theatre, both in English and French, focusing specifically on issues of language, space, spiritual and religious values, and identity; and also wishes to facilitate an ongoing dialogue on
exilic aspects in contemporary Canadian theatrical practice and research.
It welcomes contributions searching interdisciplinary methodological approaches from the fields of sociology and theatre, anthropology and performance studies, art and film history, semiotics, cognitive studies, and theory of literature and drama. The following ancillary themes may include:
1. Exiles, Outsiders, and Immigrants: How are the concepts and the figures of the Other envisioned and presented in the works of Canadian theatre artists and through scholarship, both in English and French? How are the issues of internal exile and expatriation addressed?
2. Lost in Translation: How is Canada depicted through the works of recent immigrants, in English and/or French, and theatre artists of the diaspora? How visible are immigrant artists on Canadian stage? How does theatrical practice and scholarship resist the gravity of the federal government’s émigré politics?
3. To Other Shores ... with Love! A Canadian Abroad: How is Canada depicted through the works of Canadian artists-expatriates, both in English and French? How visible are these expatriates on foreign stages? How do the experiences of nostalgia, displacement and linguistic othering mark the works of Canadian theatre expatriates?
The seminar will accept no more than 15 (fifteen) papers, no longer than 5000 words each. The deadline to receive the proposals (250 words) is December 15, 2013; the due date for the final papers is March 1, 2013.
The complete papers will be distributed among the participants in March 2013 in
anticipation of the online discussion based on the received material. The participants will be arranged in groups and asked to read and provide feedback on each other’s work; as well as to design a list of questions and issues arising from their papers and discussions.
One week prior to the conference, I will collect these lists in order to organize a dynamic
and fruitful discussion of common theoretical and practical concerns. The seminar will
unfold as a round-table discussion of the major questions raised during the online
dialogue; and it will finish with the Q-A session including the members of the audience.
