Dear reader,

These last few months were very difficult for everybody. The outbreak of COVID-19 has proven to be a colossal humanitarian crisis, affecting all societies, their economies and their arts at their core.

We, the team of Critical Stages/Scènes critiques, had to work hard against this grim atmosphere, in order to be out on time. I am very happy to announce the publication of the journal’s 21st issue which, in terms of quantity, is thus far the richest of all, with 70 contributions by 40 women and 38 men from 34 countries.

All of the texts are original works which strengthen our journal’s stated objective of providing writers and artists with a platform to engage in dynamic discussion of themes that emerge or re-emerge within the performing arts across national and disciplinary boundaries.

In addition to the issue's main Special Topic on The Theatricality of Music, the Musicality of Theatre, there is a second Special Topic in the Essay section on Mediating Performance Experiences and a third and unplanned one which was born while preparing the current issue in the midst of this unprecedented crisis. 22 contributions from 21 different countries, on four continents, give us a taste of the impact of the pandemic upon their respective theatre communities.

As for the other articles in this enlarged edition of CS/Sc. There are many different things to read and reflect upon: interviews, national and critical reports, performance and book reviews.

CS/Sc aims to be a dynamic, forward looking journal. Needless to say, therefore, we are already preparing our next issue which also carries three Special Topics: the main one on Re-orienting Arab Theatre and Performance: New Political Aesthetics, plus: one in the Essay section (Theatre Criticism in the Age of Self-Isolation and Social Distancing) and one in the Critics on Criticism section (Theatre Criticism for Young Audiences: New Directions). Three topics seemingly different, but which share one unifying concept: the idea of change and newness.

I wish you an exciting and very busy six months until the publication of #22 of our journal, in December 2020.

Our doors are open to all. Please join us as we continue producing new ideas for the ever-evolving theatre arts around the world.
