[Candrama] CFP - Fringe Festivals in Canada

Canadian Theatre Review Issue 212, “Fringe!”, is seeking applicants for a lottery-selected section of the issue.
Co-edited by Thea Fitz-James and Alice Nelson, this special issue aims to address the relative absence of Fringe festivals within theatre scholarship by exploring the Canadian Fringe circuit—its histories, aesthetics, labour practices, infrastructures, artistic communities, contradictions, and ongoing transformations. With the recent passing of Brian Paisley, addressing this gap feels particularly timely.
In the spirit of Fringe itself, a portion of this issue will be selected through a lottery process.
We invite artists, producers, technicians, volunteers, administrators, audience members, and others connected to Fringe festivals in Canada to submit their names for consideration. Selected participants will contribute a short article (~750-1000 words) reflecting on an aspect of Fringe culture, practice, experience, or history.
Possible topics might include (but are not limited to): touring, labour, accessibility, community, censorship, artistic experimentation, failure, sustainability, Fringe aesthetics, late-night culture, volunteerism, regional Fringe experiences, audience relationships, mentorship, administration, or personal histories within the circuit.
Final articles need not be “academic” in nature. Experiments with form are very welcome!

Process & Timeline

Lottery draw conducted: September 2026 with ~10 contributors will be selected through the lottery

First draft deadline: End of October 2026

Contributors should anticipate approximately 3 rounds of brief collaborative edits
  *
Publication date: Fall 2027 (yes! A year later!)

Honoraria for lottery-selected articles will range from $100–150 CAD, depending on the final number of contributors and scope of the issue.
We are especially interested in contributors interested in Fringe’s oral histories, productive critique of Fringe in its current state, and imaginings of what Fringe might become in the future.
