The cost of managing prostate cancer is on the rise and can lead to substantial economic burden to patients, their circle of care and society as a whole. Literature is limited regarding out-of-pocket costs for prostate cancer patients in the context of the Canadian healthcare system as they go through various stages of the disease. 

Given this, Prostate Cancer Canada, together with McGill University Health Centre and Sanofi Canada are conducting a survey, “Estimation of out-of-pocket costs incurred by patients with prostate cancer”.  The questionnaire is designed to determine how much prostate cancer patients spend or have spent on treatments and services related to their cancer throughout the disease; to evaluate the economic burden of the disease; and to understand the role of private or public health insurance in covering these costs, and the impact of costs on overall quality of life. 

In this Expert Angle, Dr. Dragomir will discuss the background and endpoints of the study and will respond to any questions you have about the survey. In addition, she will present the drug approval and reimbursement process in Canada and why it is important to collect this information.

Dr. Dragomir is an Assistant Professor at McGill University, Department of Surgery, Division of Urology and a Scientist in Health Economics and Outcomes Research at the Research Institute of McGill University Health Centre. Her current research is mainly focused on Health Economics and Outcomes Research of prostate cancer. 

Dr. Dragomir is an economist and biostatistician with a doctoral degree in pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacoeconomics, from the University of Montreal, Canada. In the last 12 years, she has worked in academic research in pharmacoepidemiology, health economics and biostatistics. She was involved in research projects focused on the evaluation of health outcomes and health economics related to different treatment strategies, adherence to treatments, and disease modelling in several fields, such as: hypertension, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, mental health diseases, colorectal and prostate cancer. Her research represents a valuable tool for decision-makers and clinician leaders when evaluating the clinical and economic impacts of innovative treatments.
