Subject: LETTER TO THE EDITOR -ERRATA IN OPINION PIECE

 

Please consider the following for publishing as a Letter to the Editor

 

PSA TESTING REALITY

The 20 Sep 16 opinion piece titled “Prostate Cancer? Relax, and don’t rush your treatment” by Andre Picard is timely disingenuous given that Sep is PCa Awareness month.

The writing is mostly a re-hash of past & currently circulating information that has appeared on a number of US blogs relating to PCa.

Particularly inflammatory is the statement “In Canada, routine PSA tests are not recommended”.

This flies in the face of the Prostate Cancer Canada Recommends rack card suggesting the establishment of a PSA baseline at age 40.

I am a Prostate Cancer survivor due to the discovery of early stage PCa via having established a baseline PSA level and tracking an increase.

I now chair the prostate cancer support group in Waterloo- Wellington as well as being a member of similar groups in Toronto & Brampton.

The last 3 new members to join PCCN W-W have metastatic PCa which clearly indicate a lack of timely PSA testing.

Perhaps Andre or a health reporter would care to attend one of the PCCN W-W support group meetings and meet a man with metastatic PCa.

Perhaps his/her perspective of PSA testing might undergo some enlightenment.
