Dear Glen,

HOPESPRING CANCER SUPPORT CENTRE SAYS GOODBYE

After 21 years of providing psychosocial support to cancer patients, their families, and caregivers, we deeply regret to inform you that HopeSpring Cancer Support Centre will be closing its doors permanently on March 31, 2017. After an extensive process of exploring options for the future, the Board of Directors has made the difficult decision to cease the operations of HopeSpring. We will continue all scheduled programs and services until February 28, 2017, including our wig and camisole fittings, our lending library, and relaxation appointments.

Why is HopeSpring closing?

Since its beginning, HopeSpring has been 100% reliant on community donations to sustain it. HopeSpring has never charged for any of its services, nor has it received any government funding. However, in recent years, HopeSpring has found it increasingly difficult to compete for private sector donations to make ends meet. While it has achieved broad-based annual support from foundation grants, special events and direct mail appeals, the spectrum of services historically provided free of charge can not be maintained based on current levels of financial support.

What happened to the planned transition to Wellspring Grand River?

In October 2016, HopeSpring and Wellspring met to re-evaluate the benefits and costs of creating Wellspring Grand River. Based on their mutual findings, the organizations agreed that it was not viable to bring the two centres together.

I’m a donor to HopeSpring? What happens to gifts I’ve made?

HopeSpring could not have existed for so long without your support, and for this we are truly grateful. Donors to HopeSpring should be proud of what their gifts have enabled us to accomplish during the last 21 years.

Donations to HopeSpring will continue to support our various programs and services for those facing cancer up to February 28th, 2017.

In accordance with our letters patent, any money remaining following our closure will be given to a local charity, to support needed programs and services within the community.

How will the closure of HopeSpring affect members?

We are deeply saddened that we will no longer be able to provide the care and psychosocial support that members have received, and that members will soon be facing their cancer journey without HopeSpring.

HopeSpring is committed to helping its members find other helpful services to support them. Please contact HopeSpring for a list of community resources or for further information. Additionally, the list will be available on our website after March 1st, 2017.

There are no changes to January or February program registrations or appointments, with the last day being February 28th, 2017.

How does this affect our facilitators and practitioners?

Over the years, many facilitators and practitioners have provided much-needed support to the members of HopeSpring. The skills and expertise of these individuals have been the strength behind the services we offer.

If you're a facilitator or practitioner and would like to continue to offer your services to HopeSpring members, please let us know as early as possible and we will provide your contact information to our members directly.

There are no changes to the January or February programs or appointments, with the last day being February 28th.

How does this affect our volunteers?

HopeSpring’s volunteers have been the backbone of our achievements in the last 21 years. We could not have survived this long without their passion and skills.

We are hopeful that each volunteer will take the positive experiences and cancer-specific psychosocial training skills they have gained to their next volunteer experience to help serve our community in other ways. We are very proud of our volunteers and are confident our talented volunteers will continue to serve and benefit our community in many wonderful ways.

February shifts will be as per the normal scheduling, with the last shift on Tuesday, February 28th, 2017.

I purchased a brick in HopeSpring’s meditation garden. What will happen to it once HopeSpring closes?

We thank our supporters who have purchased a brick in our meditation garden to pay tribute or memorialize someone special in their lives.

HopeSpring has made arrangements with the owners of 16 Andrew Street to preserve the meditation garden for the foreseeable future. Those who have purchased a brick are welcome to continue to visit the garden and enjoy its quiet environment.

The not-for-profit landscape is changing

The focus, mandates and missions for many agencies within the healthcare system, as for the not-for-profit sector in general, are changing. The landscape is undergoing a dramatic shift as new realities and pressures, as well as new opportunities to deliver services, are faced. This shift will enable new approaches, new organizations and new partnerships to arise and provide new perspectives and service models that will better serve the community and meet its growing and changing needs.

It’s Hard to Say Goodbye

It all started with a remarkable man
A Spiritual Warrior
Who had a vision for hope and a desire to provide help to others in our community with cancer

Change is never easy. We have a strong belief – the belief we were founded upon – that there is hope in change and that hope springs eternal. It is from this that we have great optimism for new beginnings.

Our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to everyone who has graciously given their time, commitment, and energy to HopeSpring over the years. You have made a tremendous impact in the lives of our members and community as a whole. We wish you the very best in your journeys. You have inspired us, as did the remarkable man who started it all.

A Fare Well Event is planned for Saturday, March 25th, at HopeSpring. We invite you to join us between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m., so that we may have the opportunity to say goodbye to each of you in person.

With hope and gratitude,

The Staff and Board of Directors
HopeSpring Cancer Support Centre
