Hi all:
See below for the monthly meeting announcement for PCCN Oakville/Mississauga.
Note worthy is the link to SABR at Sunnybrook where 5 doses of radiation is replacing the usual 39 doses.
Take care,
Glen

Hi everyone. Here is your reminder that our next meeting is on
WEDNESDAY JULY 18th - 7:00 PM at the WELLSPRING CENTRE, 2545 SIXTH LINE in OAKVILLE
I don’t have to tell you that incontinence is a common side effect of treatment for prostate cancer, especially after prostatectomy surgery.
For those who suffer from incontinence, there is a series of steps that can be taken to minimize the effects. The first is to do pelvic floor strengthening – Kegel exercises. Trouble is, it seems that most of us don’t know how to do these properly.
Come to our July 18 meeting and meet the physiotherapists from <https://www.blueberrytherapy.ca/physiotherapy> Blueberry Therapy who will show us how to do Kegels properly and will discuss the other exercises and procedures they have to help restore pelvic floor strength.
So no matter whether you are about to have treatment, have recently finished treatment or are just putting it down to the effects of aging, there will be advice and answers for you at this meeting.
I look forward to seeing everyone there.
Interesting Information I have seen this Month

Another study showing the merits of MRI over a standard biopsy to detect clinically-significant prostate cancer

“In summary, this important trial demonstrated that in men with a clinical suspicion of PC, risk assessment with mpMRI before biopsy, and MRI-targeted biopsy in the presence of a suspicious lesion, was superior to the diagnostic pathway of standard TRUS–guided biopsy.”
PSMA (prostate specific membrane antigen) is another abbreviation we are going to have to learn. The key point here seems to be that PSMA-PET scans can find where the disease is hiding when PSA starts to go back up after primary treatment. A radiotracer such as gallium 68 binds to the PSMA and can be detected by a PET scan. That way, specific radiation treatment to the correct area can be initiated earlier.
“ In patients with primary prostate cancer of intermediate-risk to high-risk, PSMA-based imaging has been reported to improve detection of metastatic disease compared with CT or mpMRI, rendering additional cross-sectional imaging or bone scintigraphy unnecessary. Furthermore, in patients with biochemically recurrent prostate cancer, use of (68)Ga-PSMA-PET imaging has been shown to increase detection of metastatic sites, even at low serum PSA values, compared with conventional imaging or PET examination with different tracers.”
