Ontario business BodyMedBoutique has started a petition to Ontario Premier Doug Ford, Ontario Minister of Health Christine Elliott, and several other decision-makers.

This petition is focusing on the fact that Ontario women are only eligible to receive a fraction of the cost of full breast prosthesis. For many women, this will still not be an affordable option, leaving them with psychological struggles.

Full coverage of a partial or full breast prosthesis will help women feel whole again, and prevent future issues that could generate additional healthcare costs.

PEI Government Announces Breast Density Notification Program

The government of PEI has announced that it will be including breast density notifications in its breast cancer screening program by the Fall.

Dense breasts are an important risk factor for breast cancer, as dense breast tissue makes tumours harder to detect. It is recommended that women with dense breasts be screened more often, but women are not usually informed of their breast density.

“We are thrilled to hear that all Island women who have a mammogram will be notified of their breast density,” says Jennie Dale, co-founder of Dense Breasts Canada.

Dense Breasts Canada is an organization dedicated to raising awareness about the risks associated with dense breasts and advocating for density notification. “It’s great to see provinces doing the right thing: women will be given information about their breast cancer risk, information that it is their right to have,” adds Dale.

In June 2019, the Advisory Council on the Implementation of National Pharmacare released their report concerning the recommendations on the implementation of a national pharmacare program. The final report recommends the establishment of a universal, single-payer, public system of prescription drug coverage in Canada.

The Council’s goal was to examine pharmacare models in place internationally, and use them as a guide for a national pharmacare plan in Canada. They heard from patients, practitioners, employers, government officials, First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people.

CCSN was also able to provide valuable input to the Council with the submission of a  <https://survivornet.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=318d4e052fdd9593317146113&id=33cd0c4dd2&e=2e211ff547> brief, and was formally heard during the Advisory Council’s consultation process.

Manitoba Elections

Manitoba’s next election is on September 10, 2019. The Canadian Cancer Survivor Network (CCSN), in partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society (Prairies), Dense Breasts Canada and the Manitoba Health Coalition, will be asking the parties and candidates to answer questions on cancer and healthcare-related issues.
