At HopeSpring we recognize large gatherings are not permitted during the current COVID status in the region, but you may find yourself taking up hosting duties with others in your bubble. Here are some tips for guests or for yourself who may have diet restrictions and or may have difficulty swallowing because of current cancer treatment.
____________________________________________________________________________________
Question - One of my holiday dinner guests is going through treatment for cancer and can't eat the regular menu—what do I do?
This is really tough, but if they can't eat, they can't eat. It’s not easy for them either. It is best to address the issue. Ask him/her if there is anything they could eat that you can have (mashed potatoes, other soft foods). Let him/her know you are concerned that they will feel left out - perhaps they are worried about "ruining" the day for others. Maybe take the focus off the meal - instead of a sit-down dinner have a buffet. Have people graze all day - an "open house", so he/she won't feel out of place not eating. But most of all enjoy a day with family and friends and let him/her know that it wouldn't be the holiday without them.
_______________________________________________________________
What are some tasty soft foods to include in your holiday menu for someone with trouble swallowing and what should I avoid?
Side effects of treatment for cancer can make your throat or mouth sore and can impact your ability to swallow.
Some foods to avoid:
* Sharp, jagged foods such as chips, hard pretzels, toasted bread items, popcorn, and raw nuts
* Acidic foods that may burn your throat such as tomatoes, citrus, vinegars, and pineapple and cranberry juices
* Very hot foods and beverages
* Spicy foods
* Carbonated beverages
* Cured, processed meats such as sausage, pepperoni, and salami which are salty
With those in mind, here are some tasty, soft food ideas:
* Hummus with soft pita bread for dipping (any dips, really).
* Deviled eggs or a quiche (or mini quiche as an appetizer).
* Mashed potatoes - white or sweet.
* A smoothie with flavors of the season, like eggnog or cocoa.
* Jell-O molds - you can add fruit chunks to make it look more interesting.
* Ice cream cake - yum!
* A trifle - pudding, cake & whipped cream in layers. Add fruit to make it even prettier.

2020 has brought many changes and challenges to how we work, how we socialize and how we come together for our community. Through the many challenges we have faced, some incredibly positive heart-warming and caring stories have come out of how we are able to support our fellow humans. As a community have demonstrated how we go beyond what we are usually capable of to achieve those results. One thing that has remained the same although is cancer doesn’t stop because of COVID.

In Search of Volunteers for our Peer Support Program
What is peer support?
People on their cancer journey often benefit from the practical help and advice they receive from others who have lived through similar situations. Support groups bring people together and provide a safe forum for exchanging perspectives, sharing concerns, and gaining confidence to face the future ahead.
Support groups are typically led by a trained health care professional. “Peer support” is a term we use to refer to advice and help received from fellow patients or people without medical training.

Are you or do you know someone who is part of the marginalized community going through a cancer journey? If so, we want to hear from you.
HopeSpring is seeking your help for an important research on cancer in the marginalized community. Our eager students are seeking for participants to interview.
What is a marginalized community?
Defined as a group of people who experience alienation or disenfranchisement resulting from social exclusion and preventing them from participating fully in receiving adequate care during their cancer journey. This can include people with a disability, minorities, LGBTQ+2, Indigenous, and persons Living in Poverty.
Why are we seeking your assistance?
To date, there has been limited research examining how HopeSpring is helping the marginalized community. We want to change that! As a part of our on-going workshop series, we are conducting research to examine how marginalized community navigate our programs to receive adequate care during their cancer journey.
What will the results achieve?
We are passionate about making sure that the research findings will help HopeSpring offer ways to help the marginalized community navigate our services and that we are offering the right programs that will assist them. After the study is completed, a workshop will be provided to members who participated and a report of research results will be provided to HopeSpring executive board.
How can I participate?
Please contact Nohelia Millon, Volunteer and Facilitator Coordinator, volunteer at hopespring.ca <mailto:volunteer at hopespring.ca>
Thanks in advance for your participation!

When You Should See a Community Dietitian?
Cancer and cancer treatment can affect your appetite (when you do not have a feeling of hunger or interest in food). You may also have questions about what you should eat.
Talk to your health care team about any trouble you have eating (e.g. upset stomach, trouble swallowing) or if it becomes harder to eat.
A Registered Dietitian has training in food and nutrition. A Registered Dietitian will work with you to make a plan that fits your goals and lifestyle.
