Canadian Cancer Survivor Network
May 2020 Update
Do Cancer Survivors Need Rehab?
You Bet They Do!
That is why the Canadian Cancer Survivor Network is partnering with the CanRehab team to ensure that cancer patients, caregivers and survivors remain at the forefront of this five-year research project on cancer rehabilitation. Patient partners on the team can be engaged in a number of ways, including participation in governance committees, consulting on program and research design and knowledge translation activities.
Volunteers needed ASAP!
CanRehab is looking for volunteers who would be interested in taking part in a two- hour virtual co-design workshop that will be conducted in June. These workshops will gather input and feedback on the design of our online system to screen patients for cancer-related impairments. You can participate in these from the comfort of your own home.
We are looking for adults (18 years plus, any gender) who have been diagnosed and recently completed treatment for breast, colorectal, lymphoma or head and neck cancer. Ideally, participants have experienced some physical side effects (i.e. fatigue, pain, lymphedema, difficulties with daily activities) from their treatment and can talk about their experience.
If you are interested in helping, please contact Jennifer Rosart at <mailto:Jennifer.rosart at uhn.ca> Jennifer.rosart at uhn.ca.

CanRehab also needs Patient Partners!
In the near future, CanRehab will be hosted on an upcoming Canadian Cancer Survivor Network webinar to introduce you to the CanRehab Team, the projects, and to highlight some of the patient partner opportunities. This will be an opportunity to also answer any questions you may have and to get your feedback. Over the next few months, there will be several opportunities to get involved with the CanRehab team.
Why CanRehab?
The diagnosis and treatment of cancer can result in long-lasting side effects, which interfere with a person’s ability to work, engage socially, and perform daily activities. To optimize patient outcomes, the healthcare system must focus not only on controlling the cancer but also on improving functioning and quality of life for individuals.
There is an urgent need for research that can help to inform care for cancer survivors, including the early identification of physical side effects and the development of effective and sustainable cancer rehabilitation programs that can be supported and maintained within our health care system.
The CanRehab team is made up of a large group of cancer survivors, researchers and clinicians at four cancer centres across Canada (British Columbia, Ontario, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador). This team has been awarded funding for five years from the Canadian Cancer Society and Canadian Institutes of Health Research to conduct three linked projects that are focused on improving equal access to timely, effective, and appropriate cancer rehabilitation.
* Project One will develop and evaluate an online system to screen patients for cancer-related impairments and improve access to cancer rehabilitation services.
* Project Two will test an 8-week on-line cancer rehabilitation program and examine implementation factors.
* Project Three will test the feasibility of a rehabilitation program for the growing number of survivors with incurable cancer.
Through the three linked projects, the goal is to improve the identification of adverse effects, increase access to cancer rehabilitation, and extend reach to include a growing population of cancer survivors, including those living with metastatic cancer.
6 Tips for Staying Healthy While in Quarantine
Being in quarantine has been a challenge for many of us. It is hard to feel isolated; perhaps you didn’t even want to go out, but now that you can’t, it seems more appealing.
But if your health routine was dependant on going to the gym or out for a run, walking with a buddy or shopping for fresh fruit and vegetables, being in quarantine is a challenge. Staying healthy may also be a challenge, but it’s important to maintain a personal care regimen, or to start one if you don’t already have one.
Given the anxiety we face from COVID-19, we need to take care of our physical and emotional health. So let’s look at some strategies:
1. Read, watch, and write
Many of us don’t have time to read when we are in the midst of our regular routine, so this is an ideal time to catch up. What kind of books do you like? Fiction, non-fiction, poetry, best sellers? Libraries may be closed, but you can often access library books online, or order them online. It’s also a good time to watch movies or TV series that you missed when they first came around. If you like to write, think about writing letters to friends, starting a blog, beginning a novel, or capturing your thoughts during the pandemic.
2. Get active, get outside
Now that the weather is improving, spend some time outside. Go for a walk or jog, ride your bike, spend time sight-seeing in your own neighbourhood, meet a neighbour and chat while maintaining appropriate social distancing. If you have a yard, start a garden, and if you live in an apartment, put some plants on your balcony or inside. Seeing something grow and change each day may bring a little hope to our lives.
3. Stay social
Speak to family and friends on the phone, or use Facetime or Zoom to communicate with them in real time. Being able to see each other’s faces and reactions is heartening, especially when children or grandchildren are involved. If you live with others, make sure to plan quality time together as well as time alone. If you live with children, look at ways to combine learning and play, and be patient because they are also going through the impact of school being cancelled, online learning, and separation from their friends.

4. Vary food choices
Healthy eating is important, but before the pandemic, we were a society of fast food establishments and restaurants. Preparing three square meals a day can sometimes feel like punishment, so don’t feel guilty if you order out once in a while.
5. Take a nap
Investing in a quality snooze in the middle of the day can feel luxurious, so indulge!
6. Give yourself a break!
None of us is perfect. No matter how much we try, we don’t always do the right thing for ourselves and those around us. Apologize and move on. We are all doing our best in what is perhaps the most extraordinary time in our lives. Here are two thoughts we leave with you:
“Sometimes you have to let go of the picture of what you thought life would be like and learn to find joy in the story you are actually living.” (Rachel Marie Martin, in Findingjoy.net – The Brave Art of Motherhood)
“Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud.”
(Maya Angelou)

Have You Been Diagnosed with Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) or Primary Liver Cancer?
The Canadian Cancer Survivor Network is conducting a survey to learn about living with and managing HCC in order to complete a patient and caregiver evidence submission for a new medication called Tecentriq & Avastin (Atezolizumab & Bevacizumab).
The pan-Canadian Oncology Drug Review invites patient groups like CCSN to prepare submissions so that patients and caregivers like you can be heard. Please join us and have your voice included in this important submission process.
The survey will remain open until May 29, 2020.
