Top row, from left to right: Conrad Eder (CCSN), Eileen Tobey (BeSpeak Communications), Layla Moumin (CCSN).
Bottom row, from left to right: Diane Van Keulen (Patient Advocate), Jennifer Spence (CCSN), MPP France Gélinas.
After a successful round of meetings in Alberta, CCSN met with MPPs in Ontario to discuss the results of our COVID-19 and Cancer Care Disruption Survey - Wave 2. During these meetings, we spoke to MPPs from all parties about how cancer patients have continued to have difficulty accessing cancer care services. We shared our concerns about the decrease in cancer diagnoses due to the suspension of screening services last year and the fear that there will be more people with more advanced cases of cancer.
We also discussed the importance of ensuring that cancer patients are able to receive not only their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, but also the second dose during the 12-week interval recommended for cancer patients.
We would like to thank the following MPPs and decision makers for meeting with us:
* MPP Fraser - Vice-Chair, Standing Committee on Regulations and Private Bills, Ottawa South
* MPP Gélinas - Health Critic, Nickel Belt
* MPP Harden - Accessibility and Persons with Disability Critic, Ottawa Centre
* MPP Karpoche - Early Learning and Childcare Critic, Parkdale-High Park
* MPP Kernaghan - LGBTQ+ Rights Critic, London North Centre
* MPP Kusendova - PA to the Minister of Francophone Affairs, Mississauga Centre
* MPP Lindo - Anti-Racism & Colleges and University Critic, Kitchener Centre
* MPP Martin - PA to Minister of Health, Eglinton-Lawrence
* MPP Roberts - PA to Minister of Children, Community and Social Services, Ottawa West-Nepean
* MPP Schreiner - Green Party Leader, Guelph
* MPP Triantafilopoulos - PA to Minister of Long-Term Care, Oakville North-Burlington
* MPP Wai - PA to Minister for Seniors and Accessibility, Richmond Hill
* Ministry of Health
CCSN was very fortunate to be joined by four incredible patient advocates during our meetings with Ontario MPPs. A big thank you to Andrea, Diane, Deborah, and MaryAnn for sharing their experiences and making our meetings more impactful!
CCSN aims to have more meetings with decision makers throughout Canada to discuss the importance of a cancer recovery plan that will address the surgical backlog and ensure timely diagnoses are made.
If you would like to participate as a patient advocate in future meetings, please email our Public Policy Analyst, Conrad Eder, <mailto:publicpolicy at survivornet.ca> publicpolicy at survivornet.ca.

Watch now! CCSN's Ontario Virtual Action Week: COVID-19 and Cancer Care - Wave 2
COVID-19:
The Third Wave
As many provinces have moved past the peak of their third wave, elective surgeries have resumed. However, the backlog that has already been created by the suspension and ramping down of cancer services will take a long time to clear. <https://survivornet.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=318d4e052fdd9593317146113&id=8dc72632e9&e=2e211ff547> In Ontario, there were 232,574 fewer surgeries carried out between March 15, 2020, to May 2, 2021 compared to the same period pre-pandemic, including 6225 adult oncology surgeries. <https://survivornet.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=318d4e052fdd9593317146113&id=b8b2dfc73d&e=2e211ff547> According to Ontario's fiscal watchdog, the Financial Office of Accountability (FAO), it will take 3.5 years to clear the surgical backlog. The FAO has also estimated that clearing the backlog will require $1.3B, while the province has so far allocated $610M. <https://survivornet.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=318d4e052fdd9593317146113&id=c324f44378&e=2e211ff547> The government of British Columbia has reported that they have nearly cleared their surgical backlog by increasing capacity and hiring additional personnel.
Manitoba, which currently has the highest rates of COVID-19 in the country, has had to scale back on non-essential surgeries and procedures to deal with COVID-19 hospitalizations. The situation is dire as Dr. Eric Jacobsohn, an intensive care physician at Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre (HSC) remarks that <https://survivornet.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=318d4e052fdd9593317146113&id=4a3c9e2a98&e=2e211ff547> "It is clear that cancers are progressing and are not being operated on."

Currently, <https://survivornet.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=318d4e052fdd9593317146113&id=ccf4b2049c&e=2e211ff547> 61% of Canadians 18 and older have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, and many provinces are now beginning to work towards getting those with highest-risk health conditions such as cancer their second dose. <https://survivornet.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=318d4e052fdd9593317146113&id=330e062ead&e=2e211ff547> British Columbia has decreased the interval between doses from 16 to 8 weeks; <https://survivornet.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=318d4e052fdd9593317146113&id=3f1c7df3a4&e=2e211ff547> Ontario has released their plan which will see those with high-risk health conditions eligible to book a second appointment sooner; and in <https://survivornet.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=318d4e052fdd9593317146113&id=7e3535e68a&e=2e211ff547> Saskatchewan cancer patients receiving treatment were eligible to book a second dose as of May 24th. While most provinces have included some prioritization for cancer patients, <https://survivornet.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=318d4e052fdd9593317146113&id=42e425c7d4&e=2e211ff547> Nova Scotia appears to still be prioritizing people based on age (with the exception of healthcare workers).
CCSN is pleased to announce that we have commissioned Leger to conduct our third national COVID-19 and Cancer Care Disruption Survey. In addition to asking respondents questions about appointment delays and how satisfied they were with physician interactions, we will also be looking at the financial impact of COVID-19 and vaccine accessibility.
