DEVELOPING A COMPREHENSIVE FACULTY EVALUATION SYSTEM:
The Role of Peers, Students, and Supervisors in Evaluating

Workshop Times and Topics:

The systematic evaluation of faculty performance has become an ever-increasing
concern in higher education. More and more governing boards, accrediting
agencies, and even state legislatures, are mandating the development and
implementation of comprehensive faculty evaluation programs. The purpose of
this workshop is to provide those charged with this task with a step-by-step
procedure for developing a customized, comprehensive, faculty evaluation system
that specifically delineates the role peers, students, administrators and others
play in the evaluative process. Based on over fifty years experience in the
development and operation of faculty evaluation systems in over 500
educational institutions, the workshop presenters address the issues of peer
and student ratings, the use of multiple sources of information, and the
development of questionnaires, forms, and operational policies. Also addressed
are the methods for summarizing and using faculty evaluation information as feed
back for instructional improvement as well as for promotion, tenure and merit
pay decisions.
