Tobacco Sponsorship of Theatre

In my capacity as Treasurer of the Association for Canadian Theatre Research I
have received information provided by the "Non-Smokers' Rights Association" on
tobacco companies' sponsorship of theatre in Canada and the perils thereof.
The arguments against such sponsorship are quite compelling, particularly since
they are prefaced with the warning that the national debate over tobacco
legislation "has the unfortunate potential of positioning the arts community,
in the eyes of the public, as the principal ally of the tobacco industry in the
battle over tobacco sponsorship."

If you are interested in seeing the brochure which outlines why sponsorship is
such a valuable marketing tool for the tobacco industry, and how sponsorship
sells cigarettes, let me know via e-mail (annen at cs.athabascau.ca), and I'll
foward it to you.
