AN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE HOSTED BY THE SCHOOL OF

                  PERFORMANCE AND CULTURAL INDUSTRIES

UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS, BRETTON HALL CAMPUS, ENGLAND

                                              15-18 JULY 2004

This international and interdisciplinary conference on applied interventionist theatre,

co-ordinated by David Bromley, will focus on the role of contemporary theatre and performance as a vehicle for empowering individuals and groups in relation to issues of social/political conflict and resolution. Thinking through and across boundaries existing between academia and the wider community, panels, performances and workshops will address areas such as Theatre and the Regeneration of Communities, Theatre and the Homeless, Theatre in Schools, Theatre and Therapy, Theatre in Prisons, Theatre and Public Services, as well as Theatre and War.

As a further point of focus, and as a challenge to the potency and impact of interventionist theatre, the conference will also include some papers/presentations concerning the role of television fact-based drama in order to highlight key social and political issues of our time; in this connection, the acclaimed television playwright, Jimmy McGovern, is one of the confirmed keynote speakers.

The programme of papers, performances and workshops is now complete - with an exciting range of presentations having been accepted from groups and individuals throughout the world.

The conference will be held in the new Performance Centre at the Bretton Hall Campus of the University of Leeds, which is set in a beautiful landscaped park (home to the internationally renowned Yorkshire Sculpture Park).

Confirmed keynote speakers are:

Jimmy McGovern, whose television credits include the award-winning series, Cracker, as well as such controversial pieces as Hillsborough, Dockers, Sunday (with Irvine Welsh), and the recently broadcast Gunpowder, Treason and Plot.

Adrian Jackson, founder of Cardboard Citizens Theatre Company (theatre for and with the homeless), as well as being the translator of all Augusto Boal's books published for an English-speaking market.

Tony Jackson & James Thompson (Co-directors of Centre for Applied Theatre Research - Drama Dept, University of Manchester, UK)
