Good afternoon.

I am writing to the LIST to see if anybody would be interested to, or can
recommend somebody who might be interested to invest some hours into the
production of Leonid Andreev's play "He Who Gets Slapped" as a SET DESIGNER
and a LIGHTING DESIGNER. I am directing this play at Drama Centre at the
University of Toronto this year. Rehearsals are to be started in early
October. The first night is scheduled for late November. Since we have a
tiny budget, I am looking for somebody who can volunteer to do the project -
the same as myself, and all of the cast and crew. It could be, though, a
terrific experience for those people if they want to acquire some
experience, or to put their names on the bill to showcase their talents,
because this project promises to be one of the most exciting ones that the
Drama Centre has undertook in several years.
Here's a little summary of the play itself:
The Graduate Centre for the Study of Drama's upcoming production of Leonid
Andreev's "He Who Gets Slapped" is a unique opportunity to experience a play
both tragic and hilarious, for its first Toronto production in almost eighty
years.
"He Who Gets Slapped" revolves around "HE," a Circus Clown whose sole act
consists of having his face slapped by other clowns. A man of culture and
breeding grown tired of personal betrayal and the injustice of his life,
"HE" "revenges himself on the world by deliberately making himself a
laughing stock." The crowd's laughter and "HE"'s physical pain feeds into a
bitterness against the world which gradually shows itself to be present
throughout the Circus, where nobody is happy despite their painted smiles.
Each character's personal betrayal is concealed by a conviction that the
Circus has become their life, while life has in turn become a circus. We are
given a glimpse into the behind the scenes action of this unique circus, as
each character courageously jokes and makes fun of themselves while
maintaining their personal pain. "HE", the anonymous newest addition to the
circus, is able to astonish his fellow circus performers with his insightful
observations of their dilemmas, and gradually falls in love with Consuela,
the Circus's beautiful "Tango Queen", who is betrothed to be sold to a cruel
Baron. The pain that has manifested itself through "HE"'s unique Circus act
finally erupts tragically as he faces the prospect of losing his beloved
Consuela, pushing the play to a shocking and confronting conclusion.
A rare chance to see Andreev's masterpiece, "He Who Gets Slapped" will be
the first production for the Drama Centre's 2006-2007 season in the intimate
surrounds of the Glen Morris Studio.
