I recently found out about the new textbook, Mapping Global Theatre Histories ($45-60 for e-book/softcover), which is now available at the Palgrave website with previews for each chapter. (Click on the chapter title.)

The Zarilli (et al.) Theatre Histories is nothing like the Brockett, but very much worth considering I think. Its approach is global and diachronic; perhaps tries to cover a little too much and sacrifices some ‘depth’ but as an Introduction I think it is very engaging.

Dear Moira,

My top choice would be Watson and McKernie's Cultural History of Theatre but it is also out of print (I have not assigned it in a course; just for my own lectures).

Here's one that came across my desk a few years ago though I have not ordered it for a class: The Enjoyment of Theatre, 9th Edition, Patterson & Donahue. It's not as comprehensive as Brockett but has the period you need in Part III. Has anyone else taught with it?

What I've used in survey courses is the Norton Anthology of Drama which has an excellent history section prior to the plays -- -- you probably know it -- about 60 pages for your period so it's definitely not the Brockett but well written and there is more period info when introducing playwrights.

Hugs,

Aida

Hello all,

For years I’ve been using Oscar Brockett's *History of the Theatre* as the textbook for my 200 level "600 B.C.E to 1850” theatre history course, but it has recently gone out of print. Do people have other suggestions for a textbook suitable for a theatre history survey class of that kind?

Thanks,
Moira
