Hi,
As mentioned in today's meeting, unplugging power cords and the cascading
disruption it has for clients and us monitoring the room.
The following "business case" proposal was brought forward by Amy last term.
Today, we implemented 1x7 outlet into PAS 1237 zipped tied down in PAS 1237
as an initial experiment to address the power issue brought forward through
observations. Anticipate further adjustments and refinements in this
proposal.
Original Business Case Proposal
Issue - PAS 1237 Lab Power
Consistently, during daily morning walk through/lab checks of the PAS 1237
lab space identified power cords are being disconnected to
workstations/monitors under the desks as students are seeking direct power
sources that they can use for personal laptops. This is a disruption as
students sometimes do not plug the workstations back in, causing the machine
to report errors, adding to the frustration of other students/instructors
needing to use the lab workstations and limiting the ability of a student to
quickly use that workstation as they need to re-plug it back in. Various
students prefer to work in this space, over the student lab with hubs,
suspecting that this is due to the PAS 1237 lab desk arrangement, comfort
level in this space, and access to multiple white boards for note-taking and
collaboration. We have shown them the other student lounge/lab space.
Proposed Solution (Experiment)
Install power bars at two strategic locations, known to have power
disconnected. Configure the power bar and zip tie them securely to the
existing secure cables per desktop to prevent the power bar from walking
away. While we will need to use one outlet for power to the monitor, this
proposed solution will allow 5 open power outlets for student's personal
use. This proposed solution will attempt to add more power source options
for students and improve the space promoting more a collaborative
environment, while reducing the unplugging of the lap desktops which reports
system errors and constant rework by ACO staff.
Next Steps
Looking forward to feedback and observations during the next team meeting
