Many of you probably have no idea who I am (I graduated from the
Public Issues MA program in 2011) but nonetheless I encourage all of
you to go on this trip. Let me tell you why:
1. Whether or not you have been to Italy, having the opportunity to go
with two enthusiastic, knowledgeable, caring, and fun professors will
be a life hanging experience. The friendships you will create or
bolster will also become invaluable!!!
2. Professionally a trip like this on your résumé/CV shows that you
have the ability to act upon what you want out of life, that you have
seen some of the world, and that you are potentially more interesting
than other people. These are unique qualities for a fresh graduate to
have and they are valuable in the job market and especially for
graduate school applications.
3. You are all young and have the time to do something for yourself,
really you do. Maybe you really need to find clarity about your
studies or you are dreading having to spend another summer at home
having to drive your little sister around- take a second and think
about whether or not you will have this opportunity again....
4. The money is worth it!! If you are unsure and absolutely want to
go, budget the loss of the $100. At least it will buy you time to fund
raise, save some money, get a part-time job, convince yourself and/or
your parents that this is something that will contribute to who you
are.
5. FUND RAISE! Seriously as a group you all can organize something
that people would contribute toward either on campus or the mall. Ask
the student government if they provide travel grants, use the UW Anth
Society to legitimize your financial requests!
You all should go, encourage your friends outside of Anthropology to
go, and you should experience Italy.
Ciao,
