"How Far Does Computational Theory Go ? '
Nirmalangshu Mukherji
University of Delhi

Assuming that the human grammatical system is computational, where else in nature does the notion of computation apply? On the one hand, human language seems to be a very specialised, recent and unique system in nature; on the other, given current minimalist proposals, the computational system of human language (CHL) seems to be the simplest possible system. Thus, either CHL is involved in every domain for which a computational explanation is sought, or the system is not computational. Specifically, it is not plausible to postulate a computational system to explain navigation of desert ants.
