Derrick Piens
When Things Collide

Derrick Piens’ aptly titled exhibition When Things Collide features nine new and recent artworks by the prominent up-and-coming Toronto based sculptor. His multifaceted use of materials and colours range from mutated geometric and geologic forms to unlikely pairings of objects in the act of collision. On the surface, the sculptures may appear idiosyncratic and absurd but each is a carefully considered and constructed elemental unit. Despite their apparent otherworldliness, they remain largely human in scale and share an innate, if abstracted relationship to the body. At their core, this ongoing series of sculptural works demonstrates the artist’s commitment to the hands-on transformation of materials from one state to another. Derrick Piens is represented by General Hardware Contemporary, Toronto.

Gallery Two
Nicole Collins
HEAVY: Black Paintings

Nicole Collins’ practice focuses on the effects of time, accumulation, heat and gravity on visceral materials, primarily through painting. She exploits the dynamic metaphorical possibilities of paint to communicate the fragility and resilience of life on a physical, intellectual and spiritual level. HEAVY: Black Paintings gathers together five large thematically-linked monochromatic paintings for the first time. Made using wax and pigment, these materially dense paintings have been constructed through the act of carving, scraping, peeling, melting and reconstructing the wax, often over layers of jute. They are a manifestation of the artist’s almost devotional process of accumulation and excavation over time. The end results are equally imposing, contemplative and mournful. Nicole Collins is represented by General Hardware Contemporary, Toronto.
