                *Announcing 2013-2014 WICI Activities! *
*A warm welcome to all.*
               Salutations!

The Waterloo Institute for Complexity and Innovation (WICI) is pleased to
announce our exciting lineup of 2013-2014 speakers, workshops, and working
groups, taking place on the University of Waterloo campus. These events are
free to all interested participants, although registration is generally
required.

The purpose of these events is to facilitate dialogue between scholars
across the University of Waterloo, the Greater Toronto Area, and the Region
of Waterloo communities, to create the opportunity for collaborative,
transdisciplinary research on both theoretical and applied complex systems
problems.

Themes for this year’s events include ecological change, complex systems
data challenges, modeling cognition, networks, and social innovation, among
others. Our speakers bring with them a vast array of exciting experience
and potential to inspire interesting complexity-based conversation.

Planned events for 2013-14 include:
Fall Open Meeting <#14108e39ef590302_OpenMeeting>
Speaker Series <#14108e39ef590302_SpeakerSeries>
Symposium on Data Visualization and Analysis for Complex
Systems<#14108e39ef590302_DataSymposium>(Call for Presentations open!)
Working Groups <#14108e39ef590302_WorkingGroups>: Network Science, Complex
Health Innovation, Agent-based Modeling (New!), Dance your PhD (Pending!)

*Fall Open Meeting*
Are you a current WICI member who would like to share your ideas on
organizational priorities and planning? A potential member with an idea
about an activity or working group that you would like to head up? Simply
an interested member of the community, looking to interact with other
scholars whose research focuses on complex systems?

Please join the WICI administrative team on September 24th from 2-4 PM in
M3-2134 for our fall Open Meeting. At the meeting the WICI director will
give *a very brief* overview of WICI’s mission and scope of activities. We
will then have a series of break-out groups, fuelled by coffee, tea, and
snacks, on the following topics:

   - Feedback on current WICI programs and activities
   - Brainstorm suggestions for new or enhanced activities - and volunteers
   to lead them
   - Set longer term goals for WICI as we plan a five year renewal

All interested members of the academic community—students, staff, and
faculty are welcome.

Please *RSVP* by clicking here
<https://www.eventbrite.ca/event/8194986425>to help us plan for
refreshments and break-out group facilitators. Hope to
see you there!

*Speaker Series*

Our complex systems data visualization and analysis symposium follows the WICI
data challenge <http://wici.ca/new/resources/wici-data-challenge-2/> which
awarded a $10,000 prize for tools and methods designed to improve the
exploration, analysis, and visualization of complex-systems data. The
prize was awarded to Przemyslaw Grabowicz, Luca Aiello and Fil Menczer for
their tool their tool titled “Fast Visualization of Relevant Portions of
Large Dynamic Networks.” At the symposium, Przemyslaw Grabowicz will
present the winning project and conduct a hands-on workshop to introduce
the tool. Several runners-up may also present their work. The workshop
will conclude with a presentation by Dr. Sheelagh Carpendale, Professor of
Computer Science at the University of Calgary. A Call for
Participation<http://wici.ca/new/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/WICI_CFP_data_symposium.pdf>is
now open for proposals for short presentations, hands-on workshops,
and
discussions sessions for ongoing work related to the symposium theme.
Proposals can present completed or work in progress. Innovative topics and
forums and participation by students at all levels are welcome.

*Working Groups*
We currently have the following two active complex systems reading/working
groups:

*UW Network Reading Group: *Visit the UW Network Reading Group
<http://networkscience.org/>homepage to see a list of publications,
presentations, and discussions. The goal of this group is to develop a
conversation with people who are interested in exploring both recent and
classic papers on networks, including possibilities for applying network
science to existing research challenges. For further information please
contact Milton Friesen (ingenuityarts at gmail.com).

*Complex Health Innovation under Resource Constraints: *This new WICI
working group was established in early 2013. The group is comprised of
various members of the health care community, including practitioners,
industry employees, and academics. The group aims to understand the extent
to which health care systems resemble complex adaptive systems and the
implications that arise from such a view. Particular emphasis is placed on:
(i) identifying ways in which complex systems theories and methodologies
can be directly applied to health care research and policy-making; and (ii)
curriculum development which teaches students how to apply complex systems
theories to their learning within the health care context. Please
visit the WICI
Complex Health Innovation
homepage<http://wici.ca/new/resources/complex-health-innovation/>for
updated information, or contact Professor Chris Bauch (
cbauch at uwaterloo.ca).

*NEW! Agent-based modeling working group-Call for Interest:* Agent-based
simulation models are ideal for investigating a wide range of complex
systems research questions, as they directly represent individual actors
(agents) and simulate the interactions and feedback among them. During
past WICI seminars, many researchers and students in the university have
expressed their interest in ABM and a desire for communication with others
sharing their interest. Therefore we plan to start an ABM working group
beginning in the fall term. We welcome participants from all academic
fields, and the content and structure of the workshops will be decided
after consultation with all participants. Please visit the WICI ABM working
group homepage <http://wp.me/P2zFUC-ZM> for further information and/or
contact Xiongbing Jin (x37jin at uwaterloo.ca).

*PENDING! Dance your PhD working group: *Looking for an alternative to the
three-minute thesis competition to publicize your PhD research? Need an
excuse to get out of your chair? Pending the availability of studio space
and the bone repair progress of one of the main organizers, we are
soliciting interest in joining a Dance your
PhD<http://gonzolabs.org/dance/>working group. Contact
info at wici.ca with expressions of interest, and stay tuned for additional
information.

We welcome all new subscribers to our mailing list. Please visit our
homepage <http://wici.ca/> and use the subscription field at the bottom
left-hand corner of the page to register.

Thanks to all and we look forward to speaking with you further!

Best,
