NON-DESTRUCTIVE IMAGING IN ARCHAEOLOGY AND BIOARCHAEOLOGY: THE FUTURE OF STUDYING THE PAST
The analysis of material remains of past populations lies at the heart of archaeology and bioarchaeology.  In the case of archaeology, we want to study the composition, construction and preservation of artifacts.  In bioarchaeology, we want to study human and animal remains in the study of pathology, cultural treatment and preservation.  There are lots of ways that these goals can be achieved, but one of the most effective involves the use of radiographic imaging to image these items inside and out without needing to interfere with them.  Radiographic imaging includes basic plain film radiography, which has been around since the late 1800s, clinical CT scanning which has been available since the 1980s, and microCT scanning, which is on the cutting edge of imaging technology.  In this presentation, I will explore the uses of each imaging modality and give specific examples of their use in archaeology and bioarchaeology.
