[Ssphrfaculty] Academic Publishing Workshop at Waterloo (October 19, noon, RCH206)

[Ian Milligan]

Dear colleagues,

Two acquiring editors from UBC Press, Shalini Nanayakkara and James MacNevin, will be on campus on Monday, October 19 to give an "Academic Publishing 101" workshop. It runs from noon in RCH 206, a 45-minute talk followed by Q&A and a chance to chat with the editors afterwards. Bring your lunch. Poster is attached.

The talk will focus on scholarly book publishing and will provide an opportunity to learn about the process of publishing a book with a university press in Canada. Topics of discussion include:

  *
what distinguishes university presses from other publishers
  *
how to locate the appropriate publisher for your work
  *
how to prepare a compelling proposal
  *
how to turn your thesis into a book
  *
the peer review process
  *
sources of funding for scholarly monographs
  *
what to expect of your publisher and what your publisher will expect of you

I’m assured that this isn’t a UBC marketing event, and the press is not being promoted or sold here. So it could be useful for anybody interested in publishing with a Canadian press.

For what it’s worth, from my own perspective, I have published with MQUP and UBC Press and found their processes very comparable (I also now sit on ASPP which is interesting); my experience with an American publisher was quite different. Happy to chat as a colleague.

We’ll pass this on to graduate students & postdocs as well.

Thanks all,

Ian
