Dear Canadian Theatre Aficionado,

We are pleased to announce that the Women’s Caucus<https://playwrightsguild.ca/about/womens-caucus/> of the Playwrights Guild of Canada (PGC) and the Centre des auteurs dramatiques (CEAD)<https://www.cead.qc.ca/> have joined forces for a fourth edition of SureFire<https://playwrightsguild.ca/surefire/>. This time around, we will focus solely on Francophone works, but we need your help to make it happen!

To explain, SureFire was inspired by the American Kilroys<https://thekilroys.org/> initiative, which provides an annual list of under- or un-produced plays by women, trans, and non-binary playwrights as a means of providing “a tool for producers committed to ending systemic underrepresentation.” PGC’s Women’s Caucus undertook a similar project with SureFire 2018<https://playwrightsguild.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/SureFire-2018-Intro-Doc-Rvsd.pdf>, SureFire 2020<https://playwrightsguild.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/SureFire-2020-FINAL.pdf>, and SureFire 2022<https://playwrightsguild.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/SureFire-2022.pdf>. The purpose of SureFire is to increase the profile or women, two spirit, trans, and nonbinary (W2STNB) playwrights, and to provide artistic directors, producers, educators, and others with a community-generated resource to help find (and hopefully produce and study) plays by W2STNB creators. SureFire provides an avenue of redress for the underrepresentation, lack of voice, and paucity of plays by W2STNB, and this time around, it will also help to bridge the divide between the “two solitudes,” encouraging cross-pollination and the staging of Francophone works (in translation and straight up) across Canada.

We are writing today to ask for your participation in the development of SureFire 2024. You were suggested to us as a potential Recommender because of your reputation, expertise, and good standing in the theatrical community. As such, we are hoping you will send us your top three “passion picks” or favourite full-length plays in French, or translated from French, by women, two-spirit, trans, and/or non-binary creators in Canada.

There are two caveats for the submission: 1) The submitted works should have received only one (or no) professional productions, and 2) the plays submitted should not appear on previous SureFire releases. We will double check that for you in both instances.

Please CLICK ON THIS LINK<https://forms.gle/8sRJMnrhJb2wugeg8> and fill out a short form with your submission ideas. We ask that you please send us your recommendations by Monday, April 8th.

Once we have received the recommendations, we will rank the returns, release the top choices, and make SureFire 2024 available to the public as a community resource. The names of the Recommenders will be anonymous, as will the individual submission choices made, although we do ask for and will publish aggregate data related to demographic information about the Recommenders in the interests of transparency, inclusion, and accountability.

Please fill out THIS FORM<https://forms.gle/8sRJMnrhJb2wugeg8> and send us your three favourite

un-produced or under-produced Franco-Canadian plays (in French or English translation) by W2STNB creators by Monday, April 8th 2024.

If you have any questions or concerns about the project, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you for helping us deliver a “sure-fire” means for our communities to find engaging and lesser-known Francophone plays by Canadian women, two-spirit, trans, and non-binary creators.

Best Wishes,

Rebecca and Alexandre

---

Cordialement,

Alexandre et Rebecca
